Museum of Abai

Devoted to Abai’s 100-year anniversary Zhidebai poet’s winter house began to function as a House-museum. At the eve of 125-year jubilee of the poet in 1970, museum was reconstructed. The Architectral view of the building has saved its initial type. Cloth materials sent by Abai’s relatives and friends are presented in five rooms and three common-rooms of museum. Amongst them - books on arabic, persian, turkish, russian languages, photo documents of that years, three strain dombra of Abai, household subjects and etc. The Exhibits, presenting big ethnographic interest, introduce the visitor to the Abai’s epoch. Here photos of Abai’s exiled friends - Mihaelis, Gross, Dolgopolov, Lobanovski.
THE HISTORY of the house –museum.
The House-museum in Semipalatinsk was opened in 1940. the History of this two-storied mansion is the following. It is known that Abai, beside tense creative work, was concerned with the public deals, charity. He wanted the children of his close friends make to strive to knowledge, study in the city and helped them. Aniyar Moldabaiuly - one of them, who got his help. On Abai’s insistence Aniyar studied in Russia and got a certificate of the attorney, returned to native land, to Semipalatinsk.
Built in the last quarter of the pasts century the two-storied mansion where Aniyar Moldabaiuly lived, saved to our days. There the great poet often stopped arriving to Semipalatinsk.
The mansion known in city had good reason to become a memorial museum to Abai.

The first director was a young talented man of letters - Kayum Muhamedzhanov.
During the last fifty five years the house-museum was under the guard of state. The Location of the building saved its old, nearly primordial look. The Museum is surrounded by ancient buildings. This cozy corner saved the memory about poet.
With time goes by they need to find more spacious premise for museum. As a result museum was shifted to house once belonged to russian merchants Ershov brothers, resettled to Irtysh coast from Ural. On some information, Abai now and then stopped in this house and met here with friends exiled to Siberia. At the beginning of 70-s the Abai’s museum was resettled to former house of Ershov brothers.
At the eve of Abai’s 150-year jubilee it was decided to make some corrections to the general look of the museum location. The museum building was left in its initial look, and was united to the architectural ensemble with administration building (the old-time two-storied mansion) and mosque of Ahmet Riza, where once Abai studied.
In the mosque of Ahmet Riza Abai studied in 1854-1859. The spirit of Muslim spiritual school of Orient is reproduced there now. Here one can see the ancient books and manuscripts in Arabic, slapsticks, turkish and tatar languages.
Now this is a State historian-cultural and literary-memorial museum of Abai in Semipalatinsk.
REVIEW of EXPOSURE
Straight near entry to museum the sculpture to Abai meets visitors. He looks at the enormous world purely, openly and in surprise. Moscow sculptor Dmitri Elbakidze showed him this way in 1987
The First three common-rooms compose an exposure "ABAI and his TIME", which demonstrates Abai’s epoch, social, public, economic standing in steppe, administrative and political structure of kazakh society in the second half of XIX-beginning of the ХХ cent. Playing a significant role in economic, public-cultural relationships, in relationships with Russia and the other countries and regions, dusty, godforsaken city of Semipalatinsk did not stand on the edge of civilizations. Of course, this circumstance contributed to the development of Abai’s worldview. This was reflected on his activity in Regional Statistical Committee.
We can find here information about Abai’s friends, deported to Semipalatinsk – E. Mihaeles, N.Dolgopolov, S. Gross, P.Lobanovski and others. Here we can also see the Aba’s portrait, made by pencil in 1887 by Lobanovski. Some exhibits were sent directly by Abai to Semipalatinsk ethnographic museum. Documents about administrative activity of Abai and his father Kunanbai, a large local administrative manager is presented here.
The Second part of exposures is dedicated to source, served as a base of poet’s creative activity
Russian classical, western Europe literature and Orient folk literature have affected the creative activity of the poet.
